VIVA Program

To The ResQ offers financial assistance for temporary care solutions for the pets of veterans undergoing treatment or needing in-facility care at the VA hospital in Martinsburg, WV. The confidentiality of the veteran's medical condition is guaranteed. All pets must be spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated before joining the VIVA program unless a veterinarian advises otherwise. To The ResQ will also assist with the spaying/neutering and vaccination of the veterans' pets if necessary, during their time in the program.

The program began in 2018 when a veteran needed someone to care for his two cats while he underwent treatment at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. Dottie Kracke, who is married to a Navy veteran and is a dedicated cat rescuer, agreed to foster the cats. She learned that the veteran was unemployed, battling depression, and facing homelessness. Fortunately, the treatment was successful, and with assistance, the veteran secured housing and joyfully reunited with his cats. He expressed profound gratitude to the Kracke family, as knowing his pets were in safe hands made it easier for him to commit to and remain in treatment. Since that time, John and Dottie Kracke have assisted other veterans in securing foster care for their pets or arranging kennel services when necessary. To The ResQ has committed to taking over this unique service for veterans in the form of grants to be used for boarding or pet sitting services.

Veterans will not incur any costs for their pets' care. However, they may be requested to contribute to the expenses for food, boarding, and supplies for their pets if they have the financial means.

Veterans entering treatment who wish to apply for a VIVA Program grant for their pets are encouraged to reach out by emailing info@totheresq.org or by contacting Dottie Kracke at dottiek@frontiernet.net. A program manager will work with you to secure the best solution for your pets while you are away.
